GSA Travel Award Paused
Dear Graduate Students and Members of the NJIT Community,
The GSA Eboard is writing to inform the community that, effective
immediately, the Fall 2026 Travel Award Program is paused until the first General
Assembly on September 9, 2026. This is not a discretionary decision. More than 70% of the Fall 2026 Travel Award funds have already been committed or utilized, and continuing at the current rate would risk exhausting the available resources.
The Travel Award Program is 100% funded by the Graduate Student Activity Fee, graduate student money used to support graduate students. The GSA receives no external or institutional funding for this program and must operate within the financial limits established by its Constitution and available student-fee revenue. The decline in graduate enrollment, from approximately 3,400 students three years ago to roughly 1,500 today, has substantially reduced these resources and created a critical structural funding situation and leads us to a restructuring of this program, to be discussed at the GSA General Assembly.
Therefore, no additional Fall 2026 Travel Awards can be processed until further notice. A Spend Authorization, pre-approval, or submission through a University system does not guarantee GSA funding while the program is paused.
At the September 9 General Assembly, representatives from all graduate departments will discuss how the Travel Award Program must be restructured under this new financial reality. Our objective is to preserve the program and the integrity of our institution, distribute limited resources as fairly and effectively as possible, and explore external funding sources to reduce its exclusive dependence on graduate student fees.
We strongly encourage students to contact their Department Representative before the General Assembly to share concerns and proposals. Your participation will be essential in determining how we can sustainably support the greatest possible number of graduate students.
We recognize the importance of conference travel to graduate education and research. This pause is necessary to protect the long-term sustainability of the program and the GSA.
Thank you for your understanding and participation.
Sincerely,
Graduate Student Association Executive Board
New Jersey Institute of Technology
